Tablet dedusting

Q: How can a tablet deduster improve my tableting process?

imageThe tablet deduster, which is located downstream from a tablet press, has a very important but sometimes overlooked role in the tablet manufacturing process. During compression of formulations into pharmaceutical and nutraceutical tablets, dust sometimes adheres to tablets as they exit the tablet press. Also, powder in the gap between the punch tip and the die bore wall can form burrs, also called flashing, around tablet edges during compression, which a deduster helps to remove.

Minitablets and microtip tooling, part 1

Q: How do formulation characteristics, tablet shape, and cup profile affect minitablet production?

imageThis article is part 1 of a series that discusses minitablet manufacturing and microtip tooling, which is used to compress minitablets.

Oral solid dosage (OSD) tablets are popular because they provide consistent dosing, ease of administration, low manufacturing costs, and long stability times, and minitablets are an increasing portion of the tablet market. While the exact definition of "mini" can vary, I include in the category any round tablet smaller than 4.76 millimeters or any shaped tablet with a width smaller than 4 millimeters.

Comprehensive equipment and utility change control for GMP production facilities

Greg Weilersbacher, EAS Consulting Group

This article provides a systematic process for designing utility change control procedures for new equipment in GMP production facilities.

Annex 15 of the "EU Guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practice for Medicinal Products for Human and Veterinary Use" defines "change control" as: "A formal system by which qualified representatives of appropriate disciplines review proposed or actual changes that might affect the validated status of facilities, systems, equipment or processes" [1]. The FDA's own guidances refer to change control as "...managing change to prevent unintended consequences" [2].

In practice, many companies limit change control to documentation such as batch records, standard operating procedures, protocols, and specifications, while handling equipment and facilities change control in isolation, if at all. As a result, new equipment is often installed and connected to utilities without prior input and approval from facilities, engineering, validation, and quality personnel.

To learn more about this topic, you can read the article "Comprehensive equipment and utility change control for GMP production facilities." You can also find articles under "Validation and regulatory compliance" in Tablets & Capsules' Article Archive.
