Vacuum conveying systems for pharmaceutical processes

Q: What should I consider when choosing a vacuum conveying system to refill my processing or packaging equipment?

imageWhen implementing vacuum-conveying technologies for safe transfer of any kind of powder or dry bulk material, you must consider material properties and any potential facility restraint such as limited headroom. You must clearly define equipment design to help mitigate any potential explosion risks.

Improving loss-in-weight feeder performance

Q: How does feeder refill influence loss-in-weight feeder performance in continuous pharmaceutical operations?

imageA proper and consistent refill is a benefit of loss-in-weight (LIW) feeders that pharmaceutical companies often overlook when designing a continuous manufacturing system. The method of refill, the refill control algorithm, the refill device's reaction time, and the refill hopper's size are all critical variables. This article discusses a number of important factors to consider with respect to refill operations that influence not only LIW feeder accuracy but also the entire continuous manufacturing process.

Is blockchain the key to protecting the pharmaceutical supply chain?

This article discusses blockchain's potential as an anticounterfeiting tool in the pharmaceutical industry.

The epidemic of counterfeit pharmaceuticals entering the supply chain is a serious cause for concern. Counterfeit drug products can lead to lawsuits, damage a brand's image, and, most importantly, cause potentially serious health consequences for patients. The problem has sent pharmaceutical manufacturers in search of serialization methods to increase security at multiple points along the drug product supply chain. Many companies are relying on technologies that enable them to track and trace products from the manufacturing plant to the medicine cabinet.

One possible solution that stands out as a strong defensive measure with inherent tracking capabilities is blockchain technology. Blockchain is a method of permanently and verifiably recording transactions and storing those records in a decentralized peer-to-peer network so they cannot be retroactively altered. However, block-chain is still in its infancy, and implementing the technology poses challenges to the current digital infrastructures of many pharmaceutical companies. In this article, three industry experts share their insights into whether block-chain technology may be a useful tool to counter the counterfeiters and protect the drug product supply chain.
