OEM site assessments and inspections

Q: How can OEM site assessments and inspections help us optimize processes and comply with regulatory requirements?

imageThe significant increase in the use of highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs) and the push toward high-throughput processing and continuous manufacturing have impacted not only pharmaceutical manufacturing operations but also drug-product and worker safety. These developments have spurred changes in processing equipment, such as dust containment technology [1] and material transfer systems [2].

Sticking and picking in tablet design, part 2

Q: What factors should we consider to eliminate sticking and picking in tablet production?

A: Kevin Queensen, Natoli Engineering, says:

imagePart 1 on this topic discussed factors that might cause sticking and picking during the manufacturing stage. If your troubleshooting at the production level was unsuccessful, you will want to consider changing the font, design, or placement of the tablet's logo or identifier.

Planning for successful technology transfer

Anthony Grenier, independent technology transfer and outsourcing consultant

Technology transfer is very common in pharmaceutical manufacturing but is often taken for granted, which can lead to production problems and increased costs. This article describes the documentation steps required for performing a successful solid oral dosage technology transfer.

In the pharmaceutical industry's competitive and ever-changing business climate, companies are frequently divesting certain assets and acquiring others. As a result, the industry is often very busy with manufacturing site changes and drug product technology transfers. Technology transfer is also part of the manufacturing life cycle for drug products that companies outsource to contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs). However, while pharma companies systematically follow protocols and issue reports for drug product method transfer or validation, they often fail to take the time to issue a plan and report for technology transfer.

The International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) technology transfer good practice guide [1] provides a thorough description of technology transfer documentation. In this article, I'll provide practical information to help scientists or project managers who are new to technology transfer navigate the process and issue their first tech transfer plan. While my emphasis will be on solid oral dosage forms—particularly in the example plan I discuss later—the general approach and structure of a tech transfer plan is the same regardless of the dosage form.
